Heaton Park Synagogue Attack: A Casualty Appears to Have Been Shot by Police

During a devastating development, a victims killed at the Heaton Park synagogue assault is believed to have been fatally wounded by law enforcement personnel.

Official Statement Reveals Gunshot Wound

The senior officer of Greater Manchester Police stated that the Home Office pathologist has provisionally determined the victim died of a gunshot wound.

“We sought guidance overnight from the Home Office pathologist ahead of detailed autopsies set to occur this afternoon. The Home Office pathologist indicated that preliminary findings show one of the deceased victims would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a gunshot injury.”

Attacker Information

The suspect, Jihad al-Shamie, was not carrying a firearm, and the only shots fired were by authorized firearms personnel at the scene.

It is believed the victim was part of the group behind the synagogue door seeking to prevent the assailant from entering the building.

Consequences of Police Action

“It follows therefore that subject to additional analysis, the wound was unfortunately incurred as a tragic and unforeseen consequence of the necessary rapid response employed by my officers to bring this vicious attack to an end.”

Victims Identified

Both individuals who lost their lives during the synagogue incident in north Manchester on Thursday were identified as 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz.

These individuals lost their lives when a vehicle was employed to crash through the property of the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue, before the attacker targeted attendees in a brief violent spree that ended only when armed officers shot at him twice, killing him near the synagogue entrance.

Additional Injuries

Three more people sustained major injuries in the violent act on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish year.

The chief constable added, “We have also been advised that one of the three victims currently receiving treatment sustained a gunshot wound, which is mercifully not life threatening. It is believed both victims were close together behind the synagogue door, as worshippers acted bravely to stop the assailant from getting inside.”

Community Support

“We extend our condolences are directed toward the affected relatives, and broader public, impacted by this incident in the region and elsewhere. Trained personnel are offering aid and care for everyone involved, including our brave first responders.”

Attacker Profile

Police named the attacker as Shamie, thirty-five, a British citizen of Syrian origin.

Greater Manchester police reported that three other people – two male suspects and a woman in her 60s – had been arrested “for alleged commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism”.
